Coming Up and Something New

I mean, the one good thing about my trip to the specialized dentist guy the other day (aside from learning my tooth can still be saved) was that the receptionist in particular had a hard time believing I’d just turned 44. She actually said the words, “I can’t believe what I’m seeing”. Though she also said I must have good skin, which is the opposite of reality, so she was probably just tired. Haha

Still, it was a nice thing to say.

I continue to be exhausted, still battling a cold – which is currently still a stalemate, with neither my cold nor I willing to give ground, but neither gaining any, either. I’m trying to get through today but also starting to plan out how tomorrow will go. It’s Canada In A Day day, so I’ll want to video as much of it as possible, while also getting everything I need to do done.

At some point soon I need to get promoting the Mind Reels Patreon page. The first month promotion is only on until the end of September, and it’s already the 9th! Maybe no one will get a signed script, at this rate, let alone 5 people! I just need to buckle down and focus my energy on it much more than I have been able to thus far. I knew it would be hard to launch it at the beginning of September, but hopefully once TIFF is over, I’ll be able to put more into it for the back half of the month.

Hoping enough people will see fit to donate even $2 per month ($24 a year) so that we’ll reach our first goal, and beyond that, we’ll be able to take our show to the next level! With any luck, at least. And since luck has gotten us this far, I’m not without hope that we’ll be able to continue to grow as we move forward.

I’ll also need to start setting up that next radio play, but will wait until after TIFF to even start trying to pick a date. More potential guest cast schedules ought to be a bit more open toward the end of the month, too.

I’ve started trying to write about past relationships. I’m not sure why, exactly, but in going back and reminiscing about the first one – trying to find words for it – I’m discovering a kind of thrill or excitement around the act of writing it all down. I mean, each one of course ends in heartache for me, so that won’t always be great to re-live by writing about it. But so far, focusing on the good things about the beginning of a relationship is kind of working as a pick-me-up today. I only started yesterday so I don’t even know if I’ll keep it up or for how long, but today, at least, it feels like a good thing.

I will, of course, run out of material, as my relationship life is finite and came to an end at a particular point. Officially at least. Still, there’s a long way to go before I get caught up, to be sure!

Plus, it’s probably not a horrible idea to revisit the notion of liking people, and enjoying being around people, just in case I don’t feel like being a hermit for the rest of my life. Remembering that I used to not hate so much is maybe a good thing.

The trade-off for having more rage than I did then is that I hurt less now, but maybe I can temper some of that by remembering the good moments I had with people, too.

As always, we’ll see. Or I will, at least! haha

Frustration, Money-Hating, and Coming Up

Feeling a tad over-stimulated today, on top of not having had enough sleep last night. Like, less sleep than usual. There’s, like, three different pieces of music playing nearby, and I can hear all three at once. The person whose sales I am supposed to be coordinating hasn’t come to work yet this week, so I am flying solo and trying to stay under the radar while just keeping afloat as much as possible. It’s frustrating because I don’t have access to all of the information I need to be effective, among other things, but I’m doing my best. Maybe next week will go better.

Found out Roseanne is coming to Toronto for Just For Laughs!!!

I can’t even begin to express how excited I am by this news, nor how much I would love to see her in person. I decided immediately to just buy a ticket and go by myself, just in case it’s not anyone else’s cup of tea. I totally get it, and I’m not even the hugest fan of her stand-up, nor of some of her politics/opinions, but I still adore her overall and her sitcom meant more to me than I know how to say. Man, I loved the Connor family! Damn.

Also found out there are lion cubs at Jungle Cat World right now, so naturally I want to go pet one, along with other critters available to interact with. But I’ve also had my eye on the Keeper For A Day program at the Toronto Zoo. I really want to do that…and in more than one area, so I want to do it more than once. More than twice, even. haha

And Jays games. I’ve only been to one so far this season…and it’s just occurred to me that I don’t think we ever sorted out the ticket price vs beer/food consumed after. Maybe I’ll just buy the next round of tickets and we’ll call it even again.

Anyway, I hate money. And having too much on my mind. And being tired.

There is a slight chance that we may get the Mind Reels going more consistently again. We’re talking with our producer today about meeting up for a strategy session next week to determine next steps and perhaps learn more about how we can get episodes posted ourselves more quickly and regularly. That would be a good thing. I really like doing the interview/chat thing. Since late last year, though, I’ve been feeling like everything has just ground to a halt, and getting it going again is a little like pulling teeth. I haven’t even been trying to line up interviews lately because I don’t feel I can guarantee it’ll happen without the rest of the team on board. Hopefully we’ll at least decide to do it or stop doing it, and then take it from there. But I think even just talking about it will get people excited again, and we’ll start moving forward once more.

The crazy thing is how we could probably be excelling at it, in some regard. Even during Hot Docs, some of the PR people who had never seen us interview folks before were so impressed with how we made the guests feel at ease right away, and how we could get everyone laughing and having a good time long before the “interview” was over. At the same time, we give them a space to talk about and promote their passion, and everyone gets to enjoy the end result. People usually end up enjoying their time as our guests, and viewers often end up liking to watch our guests, even the ones they know nothing about. Not every interview show has that kind of easy feel, I don’t think.

We’re easy. Haha

Anyway, we’ll see what happens. I’m sure we won’t decide to stop doing it at our meeting next week, but I do want us to stop talking at some point and actually start doing. That’s been a huge factor from the beginning…we talk about a lot of things, have a lot of ideas, and even start implementing some of them. But until we start committing to doing what needs to be done, we’re just going to keep resting on our laurels and nothing will ever change. It’s easy to get excited when talking about doing stuff, but actually settling into doing those things takes a whole different kind of excitement. It takes one that lasts, and the commitment to see tasks through.

Oh! I think I am going to become a volunteer at a local place that deals with animals soon! I have an orientation session at the end of the month, and that will help me decide if I want to do it regularly, or if I am even suited to it. It’s mostly just cleaning up poo and the like, but there’s animals!!! I received the Starter Handbook thingy last night and learned a few things about the place that I hadn’t known before, too, and that got me even more excited to give it all a try. I don’t know how much actual contact I’ll have with the animals themselves, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned from the zoo, it’s that just being around them is highly therapeutic. Also, NO PUBLIC. Being around animals, staff and other volunteers sounds pretty perfect to me, despite all the poo. We’ll see how the orientation session and my first shift goes, and take it from there. More details to follow later! 🙂

Coming Up

Well, I’ve completely forgotten what I wanted to talk about today, and now I am in project gear yet again, so I guess I’ll talk a bit about that, instead.

For starters, The Mind Reels will be covering Canadian Screen Week for the third (?) year in a row! So excited! I think this is actually my favourite event ever, and it seems Tim and I do a little bit more each year that we’re there, so I am really looking forward to doing even more with it this year! My goal is to share even more of our experience with the fans – more from the press room, the galas, behind the scenes on the big broadcast night, and – for the first time ever – we will be covering all the action as the stars arrive from our vantage point on the red carpet!!!

We’ve always posted lots of photos, and covered everything we could via blog posts, but this year we hope to do even more. More video, for starters! Hopefully a couple of quick hello-type chats, and definitely some little behind-the-scenes segments detailing what we’re up to before, during and after winner announcements each night, and possibly even some short bits live on Periscope! On top of that, we will of course continue our tradition of posting lots of photos on social media (including as many goofy selfies as we can manage), and will post full write-ups of all the goings-on on the Mind Reels blog after each event.

Basically, we’re aiming to have more of everything than we’ve ever had before!

There will be many more details on all of that over the next few days as we get things put together, but first we will focus on the big Bowling For Kids Sake event we’re participating in tomorrow night, fundraising for Big Brothers Big Sisters Toronto! We’ll be joining a couple of teams featuring various Canadian film and television stars, as well as a ton of teams featuring superheroes all in their own rights in a fun time, all to benefit the kiddos!

Just in case, there is still time to donate and share the link to my team, and help us reach our goal!

There is also some discussion happening now of the direction we would like to take The Mind Reels in going forward, what we want to focus on, and how to make it all happen. Tim and I both have ideas, we just haven’t had time to talk about any of them in depth, so we’ll take some time next week to delve into it all a bit more. I’m looking forward to taking our next steps!

Beyond that, I have (as always) several other projects on the go. New crafts I am desperate to try if I can make the time. I have a list of several different Guinness World Records I want to try and break or set. Most of them are quite different from one another, with a few pairs that are similar thrown in for good measure. Some involve writing, some involve photography, some involve craft-like activities. All are things I like. I think I have open applications for two of them right now. No…three, technically, but one was an application I applied and was approved for last year. I just haven’t made the attempt.

Not yet, anyway. 😉

All of the ones I am interested in can possibly be done on my own, but there are several of them that I would love to have a small team, or at least one other person, making the attempt with me. It’s more fun that way, especially when it goes well. I’m just a bit gun-shy now about thinking people will help and then having to scramble at the last minute to pull it together on my own. None of them will be the big event that the Longest Uninterrupted Live Webcast was, but I am mostly okay with that. Part of me worries that anything else will feel kind of like a letdown, but most of me feels like it’ll all be good practice for the next big event I plan, be it getting that record back again with a week-long extravaganza, or something else entirely. In the meantime, though, I liked being a Guinness World Record-holder. And I want to test myself, to see what else I can do. So we’ll see.

There’s the Reelies Award show The Mind Reels is hosting. I think there are still about 6 more rounds of voting to get through, and then it’ll all be capped off by a special awards episode of The Mind Reels, wherein we announce all the winners. Hopefully with some special guests in attendance, too.

And, of course, the year is now kicking into high gear, and it won’t really let up until, like, next winter or so. Conventions, film festivals, Canadian Screen Week and much more – there’s something for everyone, and we’re hoping to cover as much of it as possible.

So stay tuned!

Note: Apparently I’m actually in Mind Reels mode right now, with some GWR ideas thrown in for good measure!
